Critter count goes supersonic!

Wednesday we decided to have a nice hike along the High Rim Trail towards Kelowna. We hadn't do it before but are getting pretty good at spot the trail markings. It started off really well with bright blue sky, crossing little bridges and creeks.

We got about an hour along and hit a viewpoint overlooking the valley however instead of gazing out at the view Shaun look down and came sneaking back to me to get the camera, we both snuck up to the edge: 50% of the party more peachy keen than the other and saw 3 mountain lions/cougars sunbathing about 20-30m below us. A mum and 2 juveniles we think. Mum sidled off into the undergrowth and left Pinky and Perky napping....that was until they turned around and saw us....gulp!
At that point I turned into jelly, especially as the trail back was at the bottom of the clearing....we had walked right past it on the way up without a clue.

Shaun was bemoaning the fact that we didn't have a camera like his mate Andy which can take a zillion pictures a second.
The pictures we took really don't them justice as they were big animals (about 1m-1.5m ex tail - those are Canadian logs they're lying on from BIG trees!) and so relaxed in the sunshine.

There were some loggers working in the clearing above us so we went to see if we could get back to the car on the logging road. Unfortunately no joy...my nerves weren't helped by one comment of 'yep, they'll be hungry at this time of year, eh?!"
So armed with big sticks, bolstered with pep talks from Shaun about how he could kick a cougar's arse, a bear bell ringing out like it was the royal wedding, hearty songs and a very loud conversation about Shaun's 98% exam mark in shooting stuff we proceeded back at what could be described as a brisk march and managed get back in 40 mins what had take us an hour on the way out...!!
Two views on the experience once we were safely back at the car - one musing on the wonder of nature, how cool it was to see 3 all at once when alot of people never see one in a lifetime and you are not always top of the food chain, the other, a reflection on the beauty and wonder of squirrels and how really a hike was quite complete with a chipmunk sighting.....
...I'll leave you to work out whos' who!
hugs
Nutkin x

Smarty pants!

Mr Reed got 98% on his theory test and 98% on his practical for his PAL exams which you need to do over here before you can buy a shotgun or rifle.

What happened to the 2%'s I hear you cry.... one was down to some weird north american shotgun choke names, unfortunately the other was something to do with taking the safety off rather than on....but I have been assured this is a common error and I shouldn't be too concerned....?

Next up is the pistol exams and he's going for 100%!

The problem is once he's passed them all it means that there will be several hundred bucks burning a hole in his pocket for some new toys!

Mission Creek

Sunday (16th) saw us out again with the Lake Country Outdoors Club - this time going south of us to the Mission Creek Greenway. This runs right alongside Kelowna but we did the more wild section out of town.

There were about 15 on the hike and we met a nice Kiwi couple who have been in Bristol and Cardiff for 2 years and then came to BC when their visas ran out. We swapped skiing stories and fixed up some skiing in Big White.
This was the mid point, the whole area floods in the spring with the snow melt but when we were there it was full of bear poo....but no bears...

One of the ladies said that all her time of hiking (20years) has not seen a bear or mountain lion. So a lowly critter count - a couple of squirrels, 1 small dog and lots of bear poo

Shaun channelling Ice Road Truckers on the forest road to Beaver Lake....

.....please note the fluffy trees!

Beaver Lake

After the hike we continued up the forest road to investiage gorgeous Beaver Lake. This is renowned for trout fishing and has little wooden cabins on the lake shore you can rent and, please take note ladies, a day spa!

The dogs (one was out of shot rolling in the snow like a crazy thing) greeted us and gave a bit of tug on the heart strings Otter-wise......

High Rim Trail

Thursday (13th) saw us retracing our steps on the High Rim Trail east of Winfield - in the snow! We had been up at the weekend with the Lake Country Outsdoors Club and we wanted to see if we could retrace our steps as we had spent most of the time chatting. The whole trail is about 50kms long and runs from Vernon in the north to past Kelowna towards Big White in the south. Its marked with bits of pink and black ribbon which can be tricky to spot but much easier coming back in the snow as you just have to retrace those lovely snowy prints.

This view is from one of the apline meadows and Duck Lake is in the front with Lake Okanagan behind

Not sure if this is where we were or what we were supposed to do?!

Its snowing! 6th November

Silver Star Village and the Silver Woods run @ Silver Star 10cm and -5C
Happy Valley @ Big White
15cm and -2C
Sleeting where we are in Carr's Landing but too warm to snow...looks like we ordered the snow tyres just in time.

30 bottles

Shaun quality assured the half bottle yesterday evening - still alive this morning...positive result...!

30 and half bottles....

Wednesday saw us down at the Wine and Stein with Crazy Mike bottling our Gru-Vee. It was a bit of a battle to actually get the wine into the bottles as Mike regalled us with endless stories of Chicago (70's rock band, not musical) Shania Twain (Shaun didn't mind that bit so much) and various alcohol fuelled escapades... and we deliberately turned up at 11am thinking that the 'sampling' wouldn't have started yet but oh no...not a chance!

We had a quick sample which Mike had aged on a magnet so we would get an idea of what it would taste like after 6 months....ha ha...like its going to last that long! But very palatable which is just as well as we now have 30.5 bottles of the stuff...
So all bottled and corked we took them home and added the labels for that professional touch... apparently we need to leave it a month to mature before drinking....so we have to be good,.,,

Shaun has also got a couple of 3l bottles of beer on the go in the cupboard - you just put a yeast tablet in the bottle, add a pressure cap and 2 weeks later ......beer. Shaun did had a small sample in the shop however the somewhat gassy nature of the product was only revealed later in the evening...oh joy!

All our little babies.....

Wet day on Kal Lake checking out the dog beach and some less hilly hikes.
Today's critter count included:
1 single chipmunk
loads of Canada geese
assorted ducks
Bear poo was spotted plus a park ranger but the lack of picnic baskets unfortunately kept the bears in their nice warm dens.
